- Artist: Anna Gajewszky
Gajewszky Anna (1997) is a photographer based in Budapest, with family roots in the Ciuc region of Transylvania. In autumn 2026, she is a grantee of the Culture Moves Europe Individual Mobility programme.
During the scholarship period, she focuses on the living traditions of breadmaking in rural Transylvania, in families where baking bread in a traditional oven remains a practice with deep cultural significance. Through photography and fieldwork (interviews), she explores how bread functions not only as food, but also as a symbol of feminine care, fertility, and collective heritage. The rituals of kneading, baking, and sharing carry embodied knowledge passed down through generations, connecting nourishment with memory and the continuation of life.
Anna Gajewszky recently graduated from Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in photography.
Her work is mainly focused on families and womanhood. Her deep and long-standing interest in personal issues is palpable throughout her work. The quality of relationships humans can form with each other, with themselves, their bodies, with animals or, on a larger scale, with the land, are central elements in her work. The use of self-portraits underlines that her work is rooted in her personal life; however, the images transcend personal narrative to engage with broader themes such as womanhood, family connections, generations, the countryside, rural customs and rituals. Her pieces are mostly staged, but they are often grounded in realism, creating a duality of fiction and documentation in her projects.
Her work has been exhibited both in Budapest and internationally. She was published in the 2021 edition of Blurring the Lines, received the National Higher Education Excellence Scholarship, and presented her book at PolyCopies 2023. She was a finalist for the Paris Photo Carte Blanche Students award, and her latest series was exhibited at the 2024 BredaPhoto Festival. At Unseen Amsterdam 2024, she was represented by TOBE Gallery.
